I’ve invited my author friends to drop by with what we’re calling Story Spirals or outtakes from their books. Stories that could be happening alongside the main plot, stories happening to the main character but aren’t in the book, stories that are connected someway, somehow.
The story below is from Landry in Like (Landry’s True Colors Series: Book 3) by Krysten Lindsay Hager. Here’s her story.

A lot of people already knew I had been in the first round of the competition, but then the show decided to do a “Wildcard” contest to pick from some of the Michigan contestants that hadn’t advanced to the final round. I was so excited when I had been chosen to compete and I almost made it into the final Wildcard round. So I went and told one of the event organizers and they were so impressed that I told the truth that they gave me a, “Beautiful Inside and Out” award which included a chance to appear in an ad with my favorite model, Talisa Milan and another model, Jem Jade. The show had been a webisode online, but the producers didn’t show the part about my ad, so I was finally going to get to tell everyone my amazing news. Plus, I had some personal news to share, too—I had gotten back together with my boyfriend, Vladi, and had my first kiss.
I reached over to my nightstand and grabbed a couple bright colored bracelets hoping to distract from the volcano on my face. When I picked them up I saw my best friend bracelet fall to the floor. My friend, Devon Abrams, and I had gotten them a couple months ago. She was in the American Ingénue competition with me, but she just made it through the first two rounds. At the time she seemed like the perfect best friend. I mean, she was gorgeous, friendly, and pretty popular. She was the kind of person that being friends with meant you were somebody special. At first, we got along and had a ton of fun. I felt accepted, but pretty soon she got sort of, I dunno, controlling? She’d get super mad if I forgot to wear the bff bracelet and she was jealous when I’d hang out with my other friends. We had a big fight a few weeks ago when I told her the truth about her other best friend, India Allen, going out with the guy Devon liked behind her back. Devon didn’t want to hear it and for a while she, India, and Peyton weren’t speaking to me. It was awful. Then Ashanti got mad at me for being upset. Those three had gotten matching butterfly necklaces without me. We all had made up since then, but it just reminded me how fast friendships can turn in middle school…well, at least in my middle school anyway. Sometimes I wondered if girls everywhere were dealing with this junk or just me? Either way, it stunk.

Then, Yasmin McCarty, the most popular girl in school, starts to come between Landry’s friendship with Ashanti. Things take a turn when Yasmin tells Vladi that Landry is interested in another boy.
